La Carte, Brother (French)(c.1651) - Knight of Malta, plundered a Spanish vessel when French and Spain were at war, not allowed to return to Malta. La Veven, Captain (French)(c.1660) - Captured raiding in the Caribbean, sentenced to death in 1668, but reprieved. Labat, Jean-Baptiste (French)(1663-1738) - Missionary, sailed with Captain Daniel for a while, wrote a book New Voyages to the American Islands. Lafitte, Jean (American)(c.1780 - c.1826) - smuggler, privateer, pirate, and slaver. He received letters of marque from Cartagena (which was at war with Spain at the time). He Led the various Baratarian pirates that worked out of Grand Terre; governor Claiborne had him declared a pirate, but he earned a pardon by helping to defend New Orleans from British attack during the War of 1812 Lafitte, Pierre (American)(c.1780) - brother to Jean, above, again more of a smuggler than pirate Lagarde, Captain (French)(c.1677) - Participated in sack of Santa Marta, driven off by Spanish and returned with hostages to Tortuga via Jamaica. Lahe, Captain (Maltese)(c.1660) - Took several ships in partnership with Gamarra. Lamley, Robert (English)(c.1696) - age 12, apprenticed to ship's cook, Abeel Owen, with William Kidd Lancaster, James (English)(1554-1618) - Hated Spanish and Portuguese. Sailed with Drake's raid on Cadiz. Raided Recife, Pernambuco in 1595 and became wealthy. Landy, John (French)(c.1540) - Sailed for English backers raiding the Atlantic. Lane, William (English)(c.1590) - Raided Caribbean, associated with sponsor Thomas Watts. Langton, James (English)(c.1593) - Sailed with Drake in 1585, captained further raids on the Caribbean. Le Basque, Michel (French)(c.1667) - Sailed with L'Olonais, mentioned by Exquemelin, may have been a soldier in Europe. Le Clerc, Francois (French)(d.1563) - Raided the Atlantic and Caribbean, lost a leg before 1550, raided San German, Puerto Rico and Las Palmas, Canary Islands c.1553. Le Grande, Pierre (French)(c.1620) - See Grand of Dieppe, Pierre le Le Pain, Peter (French)(c.1682) - Not really a pirate, merchant captain, stole his own cargo and sold it in Jamaica, later captured and sent to Saint Domingue for punishment. Lemême (Unknown)(c.1800) - corsair, attacked English shipping from Ile de France Lenoir, Jean (French)(c.1594) - Helped Lancaster plunder Recife, died assaulting fortification blocking exit from harbor.
