Samuel, Abraham (Unknown)(c.1697) - rumored to have been ex-slave from Martinique, sailed as quartermaster on John and Rebecca in Indian Ocean, became local 'king' in Madagascar, disappeared by 1706

Selkirk, Alexander (Scottish)(1676-1721) - privateer marooned on Mas a Tierra in 1704, basis for Defoe's Robinson Crusoe

Shap'n'gtzai (Chinese)(c.1840) - pirate operating in China Sea

Sharp, Bartholomew (Unknown)(c.1681) - operated in Caribbean

Shipton, Captian (Unknown)(c.1724) - sailed with Captain Spriggs, ran his ship aground on the Elerida Shore on Western Cuba to escape the British man of war, Diamond - unclear whether Shipton escaped with his life or not

Shivers, Richard (Unknown)(c.1697) - operated in Indian Ocean, captain of the Resolution

Silva, Nunho da (Portuguese)(c.1577) - pilot captured by Francis Drake, near Cape Verdes, from a ship bound for Brazil, contributed greatly to the success of Francis Drake's round the world journey, left in Guatulco and taken by authorities to the Inquisition for questioning

Skines, Martin (Unknown)(c.1699) - sailed with William Kidd

Skyrme, James (Unknown)(d.1722) -

Smith, Hugh (English)(c.1577) - crew with Francis Drake on his round the world journey

Smith, John (British)(c.1573) - crew with Francis Drake during the recuas ambush near Nombre de Dios

Smith, John (Unknown)(c.1699) - sailed with William Kidd, apprehended by Captain Mathew Lowth with £400

Smith, John (Scottish)(d.1725) - short career off the coast of Spain and western Europe

Smith, Stephen (Unknown)(c.1699) - sailed with William Kidd, apprehended by Captain Mathew Lowth with £500

Soto, Benito de (Portuguese)(d.1830) - sources disagree as to the year of death, known especially for his attack on the unarmed Morning Star, and cruelty to the passengers

Spriggs, Captain (Unknown)(c.1724)

- sailed with Edward Low and George Lowther

Spurre, George (English)(c.1683) - known to be with Laurens de Graff and others at the sacking of Vera Cruz in 1683

Stout, Ralph (British)(d.1697) -

Stradling, Thomas (English)(c.1703) - captain of the Cinque Ports on William Dampier's failed privateering mission to the Pacific, marooned Alexander Selkirk

Störtebeker (Unknown)(c.1300) - name means 'a beaker at a gulg' after the practice of requiring crew members to drink a huge beaker of beer in one gulp to join crew; worked in the Baltic Sea, ship's name was The Mad Dog

Surcouf, Richard (French)(1773-1827) - French corsair, based on island of Mauritius in Indian Ocean, captured 38 gun British East Indiaman Kent

Surcouf, Robert (French)(b.1773) - native of St. Malo, privateer of great skill and daring

Swann, John (Unknown)(c.1699) - Robert Culliford's consort
